Annual Report Booklet

The BRAVE Church Annual Report was a 14-page booklet created to communicate the impact of financial giving throughout the 2025 year. The report was distributed both digitally and as a printed booklet to everyone who contributed financially to the church, with the goal of sharing how their generosity supported ministry initiatives, community outreach, and the furthering of the gospel.

I led the creative direction for the project from concept through final production, including content brainstorming, editorial layout, visual design, photography, and photo editing. Because this report served as both a celebration of the year’s ministry and a communication tool for donors, the design needed to clearly tell the story of the church’s impact while maintaining the established BRAVE brand identity.

The Process

The design process began with a simple list of events, ministry highlights, and data points that needed to be included in the report. From this information, I developed the structure of the booklet and determined how each section could visually communicate a different part of the church’s story. Working primarily in Adobe Illustrator and integrating files with InDesign, I built the layouts using a modular approach that allowed multiple photos, statistics, and short pieces of text to coexist clearly on each page. Because the project relied heavily on visual storytelling rather than long-form written content, careful attention was given to image placement, hierarchy, and composition to maintain readability while showcasing the breadth of ministry activity throughout the year. In addition to designing the layouts, I also captured and edited photography to supplement existing images and ensure each section had strong visual representation. Throughout the process, I collaborated with church leadership to review layouts and refine messaging, particularly within the financial summary section, until the final structure clearly communicated the church’s impact.

The Challenge

One of the primary challenges of this project was designing within strict brand constraints while still creating a visually engaging editorial experience. The report needed to adhere closely to BRAVE’s existing brand guidelines, including a limited color palette of red, white, black, and gray as well as approved brand typography. Additionally, photography used in the report had to feature individuals who were actively involved in the church, which required sourcing existing imagery and capturing new photos to fill gaps in the content. Another challenge was translating complex information—particularly the financial summary—into a format that felt clear, transparent, and respectful of the audience. While leadership approved the initial concept for most pages, the financial section required multiple rounds of revision and discussion to ensure the information was communicated in the right tone and structure. This collaborative process ultimately shaped the final design and strengthened the clarity of the report.

Research & Discovery

To begin the project, I reviewed an annual report from another local church to understand how similar organizations communicated ministry impact and financial transparency to their communities. While this reference provided a starting point, BRAVE Church’s unique brand guidelines and messaging required a different visual approach. Because I had been attending and serving at BRAVE since 2020, I also relied heavily on my familiarity with the church’s culture, mission, and rhythms throughout the year. This perspective helped guide how each section of the report could visually tell the story of the church’s ministries, events, and community impact. The goal was to create a tone that felt mission-focused, warm, and celebratory—communicating gratitude for the congregation’s generosity while highlighting the ways their giving supported meaningful ministry throughout the year.

Final Deliverables

The final deliverables included a 14-page annual report designed for both digital and print distribution: • A fully designed 14-page booklet communicating the church’s ministry impact for the year • Ministry highlights and event coverage showcasing key moments from the church’s calendar • Community impact statistics, including baptisms, small groups, and ministry engagement • A financial summary page designed to communicate giving and resource allocation clearly and transparently • Original photography and edited imagery used throughout the report to visually represent the church community • A digital PDF version distributed via email to tens of thousands of recipients, along with a printed booklet version for physical distribution The final report communicated the church’s values, mission, and rhythms while providing donors with a clear and meaningful overview of how their giving supported the ministry throughout the year.

Outcome & Results

The annual report was distributed digitally to tens of thousands of recipients and was well received by the church community. Because BRAVE had not produced a formal annual report in previous years, the booklet was appreciated as a new way of communicating transparency and celebrating the impact of the congregation’s generosity. The final design successfully translated a wide range of information—including ministry highlights, statistics, and financial summaries—into a cohesive visual narrative that felt engaging and easy to navigate. The project helped establish a clear model for how the church could communicate its yearly impact through design moving forward.

Reflection

This project challenged me to grow in editorial design and visual storytelling, particularly within the constraints of strict brand guidelines. Because the report relied heavily on imagery and concise messaging rather than long-form written content, I had to find creative ways to organize large amounts of visual information while maintaining clarity and hierarchy. The process also strengthened my ability to design within limitations—working with a restricted color palette, approved typography, and specific photography requirements while still producing a cohesive and engaging final product. Navigating these constraints pushed me to think more strategically about layout, pacing, and composition. Moving forward, the lessons from this project will continue to shape how I approach editorial design, especially when translating complex information into accessible visual narratives. It reinforced the importance of thoughtful structure, clear hierarchy, and intentional storytelling when designing publications that communicate both information and impact.
