Bible Study: Holy Identity by Pastor Jeff

Holy Identity is a 33-page Bible study developed from a sermon series at BRAVE Church. The study was designed to help individuals reflect on biblical teachings about identity in Christ and apply those truths to their daily lives through guided reading, journaling, and reflection.

For this project, I was provided with the written copy and the cover design established from the sermon series branding. My role was to design the interior editorial layout of the workbook, translating the written content into a structured and visually engaging study format. The final product was created for both printed distribution and digital use, allowing individuals to work through the study independently.

The goal of the design was to create a layout that felt approachable, clear, and supportive of personal reflection while remaining consistent with the existing creative direction of the series.

The Process

The layout was designed primarily in Adobe InDesign, where I developed a structured editorial system to ensure consistency throughout the 33-page document. I created paragraph and character styles for key text elements such as headings, scripture passages, reflection prompts, and body copy. These styles helped maintain typographic hierarchy and made the document easier to edit and scale as the project developed. I also built master pages to establish a consistent layout framework across the workbook. This allowed repeating elements such as headers, margins, and section formatting to remain uniform throughout the study. Throughout the design process, I focused on creating a clear flow between reading, reflection, and writing sections. Careful attention was given to spacing and composition so that each page felt balanced and approachable, encouraging readers to engage thoughtfully with the material.

The Challenge

The primary challenge of this project was designing a thoughtful editorial layout that aligned with the established visual direction while also supporting the functional needs of a Bible study. Because the cover design and overall creative direction were already defined, the interior pages needed to feel cohesive with the existing visual identity while still offering variety and readability across the workbook. Another key consideration was ensuring that the layout supported the rhythm of personal study. The design needed to provide clear hierarchy for scripture passages, reflection prompts, and discussion questions while also leaving sufficient space for readers to write and engage with the material. Balancing these elements required careful attention to typography, pacing, and white space so that the workbook felt both structured and inviting for individual use.

2

Research & Discovery

To begin the project, I reviewed previously published Bible studies from BRAVE Church to understand how their study materials were typically structured and formatted. This helped establish guidelines for spacing, section hierarchy, and the overall reading experience expected by the church’s audience. Using these references as a foundation, I explored ways to adapt the layout system to support the specific content of the Holy Identity study. The goal was to maintain consistency with existing resources while creating a layout that felt clean, reflective, and easy to follow for individuals working through the study on their own. The visual tone emphasized simplicity and clarity, allowing the content and scripture to remain the focal point while supporting moments of personal reflection.

Final Deliverables

The final deliverables included a complete 33-page Bible study workbook designed for both print and digital use: • 33-page editorial layout designed for personal Bible study and reflection • Structured sections including scripture passages, reflection prompts, and journaling space • A consistent typographic system developed using paragraph and character styles • Master page templates to maintain visual consistency across the document • Print-ready files for physical distribution • A digital PDF version for online access and individual study Together, these elements created a cohesive and accessible study resource that supported personal engagement with the material.

4

Outcome & Results

The Holy Identity Bible study was well received by church leadership and the congregation. Leadership approved the design quickly, and the final layout successfully supported the intended rhythm of personal study and reflection. The structured editorial system allowed the content to feel clear and approachable while maintaining visual consistency with the broader sermon series branding. The finished workbook provided individuals with a thoughtful resource for engaging more deeply with the message of the series.

Reflection

This project strengthened my skills in editorial design and typesetting for long-form content. Designing a workbook centered around scripture and reflection required thoughtful organization of text, hierarchy, and spacing to ensure the material remained readable and engaging throughout the study. It also reinforced the importance of building scalable layout systems when working with multi-page publications. Developing paragraph styles, character styles, and master pages allowed the document to remain organized and consistent while streamlining the design process. Overall, the project deepened my experience designing study materials that balance structure with openness—creating space not only for reading but for personal reflection and engagement with the content.
